My Musings

I was deeply engrossed in the book while reading, it was a hilarious fake dating academia drama. Chapter after chapter the protagonist was going deep into her own scattered shit of lies. Though, I feel like, it never seems difficult for the protagonist and his fake dating partner to act the whole charade in front of other people. There was no close shave in the whole story. That was the problem which I have with this story. Otherwise, all and all it was an entertaining, gorgeously romantic, and highly riveting read.

Storyline

Olive Smith is an orphan, insecure, hardworking, gold-hearted, and a smart biologist. She spends most of her time hanging out with lab rats and emailing her colleagues for funding and collaboration in her smart discovery to find a cure for pancreatic cancer.

I'm an Indian student of arts, so it was sometimes quite difficult for me to understand the academic talks of the characters. Nevertheless, this little pain comes up with a plethora of laughter excerpts.

After losing her loved ones at a young age, Olive feels insecure about relationships. She doesn't have any faith in a long-lasting relationship and so she isn't ready to put her heart on stacks again. But she is all happy to hang out with her friends and the loneliness hasn't got a chance to threaten her about her future where she is going to end up in solidarity. Her friends are her only family. There is nothing that she can't sacrifice for them.

Eventually, the testing comes for Olive when she breaks up with her boyfriend, Jermy. She never really liked him, just got attracted by his adorable features for a while, but soon she realizes that he isn't the one. Though Olive is totally oblivious that her best friend Anh is head over heels in the business of liking her ex. But Anh doesn't want to break the girl code and make her best friend feel cheated. So, she decides to quench all of her feelings for Jermy.

Nevertheless, Olive is all okay to see her best friend with her ex as she never was into him. But it is a mammoth task to make Anh believe that It is okay if she dates Jermy and she needs to feel guilty about it.

So to produce a point to her bestie that she has moved on and she is now happily dating someone else. Olive lied, there is no other guy, it is all fiction, in reality, she isn't dating at all. When she was caught off-guard by Anh's piercing gaze, and in hysteria, she kissed a stranger.

The plan is simple, quick, and easy to accomplish till the guy whom she kissed isn't Adam Carlsen, a rigid-a-hole professor with a personality of a young, hotshot, tall, and dark man. Most of the students curse the day they met him. Students hate him because he makes them cry most of the time.

She could be fucked and thrown out of the grad school and she could be gone broken in just thinking about hiring a good attorney, and at last, she could be deported to Canada along with her shattered dreams, but interestingly, Adam isn't furious about her love triangle drama. And he offers to help her, he is ready to be her fake boyfriend. So, Anh ultimately can date Jermy, and while Adam too can gain some leverage with the help of Olive.

Both of the parties seem like benefits from the charade of fake dating till Olive realizes that she starts to like their Wednesday coffee dates way too much.

Even after having a reputation of an antagonist and undisputable a-hole, Adam treats Olive sweet and respectfully. He throws his tantrums sometimes but she knows how to cheer him up. He seems to enjoy spending time with her which is skeptical for the whole university including Olive.

But Olive has to make some tough decisions to face her true feelings which she starts cultivating for the professor Adam Carlsen. Would she be brave enough to confess her feelings or would she chicken out like always? What repercussions she would have when the Rock-Jenga of her lies ultimately collapses?

A tiny problem

The only point which I was expecting to be presented more intensely by the author is the PDA scenes where it was always embarrassing for Olive to play her part while Adam took everything calmly. They both never put together in a hysterical situation where both equally go haywire and still they have to pretend that they are good.

Characters

All the characters are fully formed and perfectly syncing with the story. In supporting characters, Malcolm and Holden were great, entertaining, inspiring, and endearing. One can't be dampened when they are around to cheer up. Though it would be more fun if they have more parts to play and Holden has an early entry in the story. I think the author saved them for the sequel and I'm all excited to read it.

In a nutshell

This book is hilarious, loaded with love, romance, banters, sarcasm, a Rock-Jenga of lies, and an abundance of embarrassing but adorable PDA scenes. Fake dating was all fun and full of surprises till the last page. You would find a lot of ideas on how to kill your best friend scientifically and brutally inside of your head to feel good. You aren't going to have this much fun while watching a rom-com movie which you can have in abundance while reading this chucklesome and endearing read. So read it.

Recommendation

It has chapter 13 which is fully loaded with Pov of Adam and Olive. I never read such intense lecherous excerpts even in an erotica book which Ali Hazelwood spreads in this specific chapter. It was torrid. Beware! It can burn you inside out. So if you are too young to read this stuff, don't pick it up. Otherwise, All the adult readers who love rom-coms can read this. It is going to make your whole week chucklesome and wonderful.
